The Highlands Golf Park Legacy

About Highlands Golf Park – Charlottesville’s Family-Built Golf Practice and Learning Facility
Nestled just off Route 29 North near Charlottesville, Highlands Golf Park is a one-of-a-kind golf facility built on passion, family, and a lifelong love of the game.
In 1997, Peter and Anne Marie Scheuermann relocated from Stowe, Vermont with a vision: transform a beautiful stretch of Virginia farmland into a welcoming, community-focused golf center. As a retired architect, Peter personally designed and oversaw the development of the park, ensuring every detail reflected both functionality and natural beauty. Soon after, Anne Marie joined him—bringing with her a deep-rooted connection to the game of golf.
Together, alongside their six children, they created a truly unique destination featuring Virginia’s first 18-hole putting course and a 44-station driving range, offering golfers of all skill levels the opportunity to learn, practice, and enjoy the game.
A Legacy Rooted in Golf Excellence
Golf is more than a sport at Highlands Golf Park—it’s a legacy. Anne Marie’s father, Leslie “Les” Mercer (1905–1960), was a highly respected golf instructor dedicated to making the game accessible to players of all ages and skill levels. He served on the Board of the United States Golf Association and contributed to both the Public Links and Junior Golf Committees.
To honor his influence and Scottish heritage, the Scheuermann family named their facility Highlands Golf Park, creating a lasting tribute to his life’s work and passion for growing the game.
Built on Passion, Family, and Experience
Anne Marie’s own journey in golf began at just four years old in St. Albans, Vermont. She went on to become a Vermont high school champion, competed at the University of Vermont, and later coached high school golf while building a nearly 40-year career as a teaching professional. Highlands Golf Park was not just a business venture—it was a family mission. Each member of the Scheuermann family contributed their unique talents:
- Legal expertise, creative marketing, and design
- Athletic insight and golf instruction
- Artistic and operational support
This collaborative effort helped shape Highlands Golf Park into one of the most welcoming and well-rounded golf practice facilities in Central Virginia.
